Relationships can be tricky, but it can be even harder when the person you're with suffers from bipolar disorder. People with bipolar disorder have changes between extreme high (manic) and low (depressive) moods. It's important to remember that sufferers find it difficult to control their moods and that irrational/ eccentric behaviour is all part of the mental illness. Here are a few tips to help you deal with such a relationship:
1. Remain calm and supportive regardless of what mood their in.
2. Remember to take time out for yourself to breathe and recuperate.
3. Go with your partner to his/ her therapy sessions to show your support.
4. When your partner is in a healthy mental state, talk to him/ her about your needs and hurts.
5. Help monitor your partners medication.
5. Don't argue with your partner when they are manic or depressive. It is of no use.
6. Try and focus on what's both for you both.
7. When your partner is in a neutral mood, spend some quality time together.
8. Never throw the fact that your partner is bipolar in his/ her face.
9. Try to find a local bipolar support group to join to share your worries or upset.
10. Don't blame yourself or your partner for what's going on. It's no ones fault.
